The Festival Gallery at the Fairgreen is a pristine retail unit, never used for its intended purpose since it was built over a decade ago. The clean lines of its smooth, cool concrete and shining glass are an idealised vision of the modern city; but it stands on the site of the last city slaughterhouse, in use until only 20 years ago. Our city sits on top of this memory of blood and death: as much as we try to repress it every day, the memory comes back unbidden – the screams of the animals, the terrible, sickly smells. At the Fairgreen, we present new commissions by Liam Crichton and Rachael Campbell-Palmer, alongside sculpture, video installation, photography and painting.
